The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has begun issuing auto-generated notices for traffic law violations in various roads across Dhaka city, using CCTV cameras to capture video and still images. If recipients fail to appear and pay the stipulated fines after receiving the notice, further legal steps—such as summons or arrest warrants—will be initiated.
This information was disclosed in a public notice signed by Acting Commissioner Md Sarwar on Sunday.
According to the notice, the initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion, modernize traffic management, and provide improved civic services. Measures are being taken against owners and drivers of vehicles operating without registration or fitness certificates, those involved in illegal parking, and others violating traffic laws and causing obstructions.
Using video footage and still images, the DMP Traffic Division is sending auto-generated notices via registered post to the addresses of vehicle owners and drivers through an e-traffic prosecution software system. Upon receiving the notice, the concerned individuals must appear at the DMP headquarters or relevant traffic division and settle the case by paying fines as prescribed under the Road Transport Act, 2018, via bank or mobile banking.
The notice further states that if the concerned owners or drivers fail to appear after receiving the notice, subsequent legal action (summons or arrest warrants) will be enforced through special metropolitan magistrates of the DMP.
The public is advised to avoid any financial transactions or sharing of personal information outside this official process regarding CCTV or video-based cases. If any individual or fraudulent group attempts to collect money using the pretext of such cases, citizens are urged to immediately contact the nearest police station or relevant traffic division.
It also mentioned that the DMP has recently installed advanced CCTV cameras with AI technology at various traffic signal crossings and important locations. Based on footage from these cameras, digital prosecutions have begun for offenses such as running red lights, crossing stop lines, driving on the wrong side, picking up passengers haphazardly and causing obstructions, illegal parking, and blocking left lanes.
