Ex-DGFI Director Afzal Naser placed on fresh 2-day remand

A Dhaka Court has placed Lt Col Md Afzal Naser, a former director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), on a fresh two-day remand in a case filed over the killing of Mahmudul Hasan in capital’s Uttara East area.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain of passed the order on Monday. The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md Ashraful Alam of Uttara East Police Station sought a seven-day remand for further interrogation. Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the matter.

Naser was produced before the court following the completion of a four-day remand granted on April 23.

According to the remand petition, investigators alleged that widespread violence was carried out under Naser’s direction and with his financial support during the anti-discrimination student movement. They argued that further remand is necessary to uncover key details and ensure a thorough investigation.

According to the case statement, on August 5, 2024, Mahmudul Hasan participated in a procession linked to the anti-discrimination student movement. At approximately 4:00 pm, when demonstrators reached the eastern side of the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway near the Azampur foot overbridge in Uttara, the accused, along with unidentified individuals, allegedly opened fire using illegal firearms. Hasan was shot and died at the scene.

Following the incident, the victim’s family filed a murder case with Uttara East Police Station.
