Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, spokesperson of the National Citizens Party (NCP), on Thursday alleged that the government is attempting to move forward by “misleading public opinion.”
He made the remarks after paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar.
“As seen in Bangladesh’s history, governments that go against the people’s mandate do not last,” he said.
Referring to past political developments, Asif said public sentiment has repeatedly shaped the country’s trajectory, including events surrounding the 1970 elections and subsequent developments leading to independence, as well as the 1990 mass uprising.
He also alleged that recent political developments are ignoring public opinion, including outcomes of referendums and reform initiatives.
Asif said his party remains committed to seeking justice for past incidents, including allegations of killings, through due process.
“We are standing firm in our demand for justice and will continue to work towards it,” he said.
He urged the government to implement reforms and uphold public expectations, warning that failure to do so could trigger renewed public protests.
“We want to work together to build a better Bangladesh. But if public opinion is ignored, people may once again take to the streets,” he said.
