Inqilab Mancha has warned it will launch a movement to overthrow the government if the trial over the murder of martyr Sharif Osman Hadi is not completed within the next 30 working days.
Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of the organization, made the announcement Friday during a sit-in program at Shahbaghh. Following Friday prayers, leaders and activists marched from Dhaka University’s central mosque and staged the sit-in at Shahbagh.
Monmotho Haldar, sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station, told Dhaka Tribune that most protesters had left by 6:30pm, although some remained, chanting slogans.
Inqilab Mancha has been holding programs at Shahbagh since December. 26, demanding justice for Hadi’s murder. The group returned Friday after announcing an online program titled “Saluting Our Cultural Hero” on December 29.
Al Jaber said Hadi was killed for initiating a movement to protect Bangladesh’s independence and establish justice. He alleged the government has shown no intent to arrest the main perpetrators, noting that those detained so far are family members of the killers.
He also claimed that Meghalaya police had denied the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner’s statements regarding arrests in Meghalaya, saying this proves the public is being misled.
Al Jaber said the government requested time until January 7, while Inqilab Mancha had given 30 working days, of which 22 remain. “We are counting down those working days. If the government fails to complete the trial within the stipulated time, we will launch a movement to overthrow the government,” he said.
He demanded that all suspects be identified and a charge sheet submitted by January 7, adding that the organization would seek support from all pro-Bangladesh political parties and cultural organizations but would remain on the streets even without backing.
