NCP's Akhtar welcomes restoration of caretaker government

Akhtar Hossain, member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has described the court’s verdict restoring the caretaker government system as a long-overdue relief for the nation.

He views the development as a positive step.

Speaking to reporters at the NCP office in Banglamotor, Dhaka, on Thursday evening during a briefing, Hossain said the caretaker government system has generally been acceptable to the majority of people in Bangladesh.

He noted that during the previous Awami League government, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution had been annulled and a completely one-sided verdict delivered.

Welcoming the recent verdict that declared the ruling illegal and restored the nonpartisan caretaker government system for election periods, Hossain said, “Through this, the nation has been freed from a long-standing disgrace.”

Hossain further emphasized that elections must be participatory and that ambiguities in the July Charter need to be clarified. Only then will the NCP sign the July Charter.
