Body-worn cameras will be used in sensitive locations during the upcoming national parliamentary election to strengthen on-ground security.
However, the previously proposed procurement of 40,000 cameras will now be reduced, Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed said.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday at the secretariat, he said the plan had undergone extensive review.
“Initially, a large number of body cameras were proposed. We asked for a thorough review—what the cost would be and, most importantly, how procurement would be handled in a transparent manner,” he said.
Dr Salehuddin noted that the procurement will move forward but in a scaled-down, more rational form. Cameras will be used only in sensitive election areas, based on recommendations from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
“We cannot deploy body cameras everywhere. Monitoring the footage and taking timely action is also a major factor,” he said.
“The ministry, in consultation with the Election Commission, will proceed with purchasing cameras for the sensitive zones.”
