The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained a man for forging the signatures of the home affairs adviser and other key officials, deceiving people with fake documents for financial gain.
The detainee has been identified as Jafar Iqbal, 46.
He was held on Friday in an operation conducted by the intelligence wing of RAB headquarters and an operational team of RAB-1 in the Khilkhet area of the capital.
Lieutenant Colonel Ashiqur Rahman, director of RAB's Legal and Media Wing, confirmed the matter on Saturday.
During the operation, fake documents signed by various government institutions, counterfeit seals, visiting cards, and other fraudulent materials were seized from his possession.
During preliminary questioning, he admitted to being involved in fraud. Legal proceedings against him are underway.
Regarding Jafar’s fraudulent methods and activities, RAB revealed that he had been impersonating the Home Affairs Adviser and other government officials for a long time.
He deceived people by promising jobs, promotions, and transfers, as well as by offering permits for importing cattle and other goods from neighboring countries, thereby extorting large sums of money.
According to the preliminary interrogation, the RAB official said that Jafar chose fraud as a means to maintain a luxurious lifestyle. He used to introduce himself as a close associate of influential figures and extort money from job seekers by promising employment.
Additionally, he deceived government officials and employees by offering recommendations for transfers and promotions, and he tricked businessmen by promising import-export approvals.
Recently, he provided a businessman with a fake approval letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs for setting up a cattle trading post and importing cattle in a border area.
RAB also disclosed that Jafar Iqbal did not have a permanent office.
He used rented houses as temporary offices and would go into hiding to evade arrest. A case against him is already filed at Sadullapur Police Station in Gaibandha.
