A total of 621 road accidents occurred across various parts of the country in January, claiming 608 lives and injuring 1,100 people, according to a report by the Road Safety Foundation.
The organization disclosed this information in a press release on Tuesday.
The report was compiled based on data from nine national dailies, seven online news portals, various electronic media, and the foundation’s own sources.
According to the report, among the 608 deceased, 72 were women and 84 were children.
Motorcycle accidents claimed the lives of 264 people in 271 incidents.
In addition, four waterway accidents in January resulted in six deaths and two injuries, while 22 railway and truck-related accidents caused 26 fatalities and left seven others injured.
The RSF revealed that Dhaka division recorded the highest number of road accident fatalities. In this division, 161 people died in 172 accidents.
Conversely, Barisal division witnessed the lowest number of casualties, with 30 fatalities from 31 accidents.
Among individual districts, Dhaka reported 42 accidents, resulting in 37 deaths. Panchagarh had the fewest accidents, with no reported fatalities.
An analysis of accident timings revealed that 7.8% occurred at dawn, 31.7% in the morning, 17.23% at noon, 15.45% in the afternoon, 9.98% in the evening, and 19.16% at night.
