Students of Jagannath University (JnU) have called for a mass hunger strike to demand temporary housing arrangements and the transfer of work on the university's second campus to the military.
Students announced the program via social media on Thursday night.
According to the announcement, students will begin the hunger strike at the university’s Shaheed Minar from 9am on Sunday.
They said that the strike will continue until a clear roadmap is provided to ensure the second campus and temporary housing arrangements.
In a video message on social media, AKM Rakib, a university student and one of the organizers of the movement, said: "After the ministry meeting, we gave our new administration a reasonable amount of time. However, despite the passage of time, we have seen no progress. Once again, they are resorting to bureaucratic delays like exchanging letters. This is why we have announced the hunger strike. We will continue it indefinitely until the work on the second campus is officially handed over to the military."
Tausib Mahmud Sohan, the spokesperson for the movement, said: "When we staged a sit-in in front of the Secretariat on November 12, demanding the transfer of the second campus to the military, we were assured progress. However, two months have passed, and we have not seen any visible progress. Neither the administration nor the Secretariat has provided us with any updates. For this reason, we are compelled to call for a hunger strike."
In November last year, students protested with three demands, including the transfer of work on the second campus to the military.
At the time, the Ministry of Education said there were no obstacles to handing over the second campus project to the military and that the ministry would provide assistance.
However, students allege that no visible progress has been made even after two months.
