Bone-chilling cold, accompanied by a dense blanket of fog is expected to return across the country.
Starting Wednesday, the daytime temperature across the country may drop by 1 to 2°C.
With this, after a brief pause, a cold wave may begin in northern regions and other parts of the country.
In the meantime, the temperature in Tetulia, Panchagarh, has already dipped to cold wave levels.
The Meteorological Department has said that the cold wave could persist across the country for a week, with an increase in cold.
Over the past few days, the temperature in the capital has been rising by 1 to 2°C daily, reducing the feeling of cold during the day.
However, in the next five to six days, temperatures may steadily decrease again.
The minimum temperature in more than half of the country's areas could drop below 10°C.
Due to heavy fog, the sun might remain obscured during the day, intensifying the sense of cold.
The upcoming cold wave may turn out to be the longest-lasting cold wave of the current winter season.
When asked about the situation, meteorologist Omar Faruq from the Meteorological Department told the media that the flow of icy cold winds has strengthened.
Along with this, the amount of fog is rapidly increasing. As a result, both fog and cold are likely to rise quickly in the coming days.
This cold spell might persist until January 14.
Regarding the areas that will be most affected by the upcoming cold wave, meteorologists say that it may sweep across the districts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Khulna divisions.
In addition to the northern regions, the cold intensity could be higher in areas from Jessore and Chuadanga to Kushtia.
Sylhet division is also expected to experience severe cold.
