Former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun has been shown arrested in a case regarding the killing of Sabbir Hossain during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Rabindra Sarani, Uttara West Police Station.
Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun was presented before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court at 10am on Monday.
Subsequently, the investigating officer of the case, Abdur Rahman Bhuiyan, submitted a petition to show him arrested.
The defense lawyers opposed the petition.
After a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masuma Rahman granted the petition to show Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun as arrested.
Uttara West Police Station’s General Recording Officer Atikur Rahman Khan confirmed this information to the court.
He said: "On December 30, a petition was filed to show Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, former mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Atiqul Islam, and lawyer Robin as arrested in this case. However, on that day, Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun was not presented in court. The other two were shown arrested after the hearing, and today’s date was set for the hearing regarding Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun."
Sabbir Hossain was working as an office assistant at a Biobid company in the capital.
During the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, he joined a peaceful protest march on July 18 last year at Rabindra Sarani, Sector 7 of Uttara West Police Station, near the southern side of the Rajuk Market.
The march included students, citizens, and people from various professions.
At that time, members of Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League reportedly fired on the protesters.
Sabbir was shot in the neck.
Later, Abrar Hanif, 26, took him to Uttara Crescent Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, Sabbir’s father filed a case with Uttara West Police Station on September 19 of the same year.
