Public Prosecutor (PP) Omar Faruq Faruqi of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court has claimed that the attack on the lawyer of former minister and Awami League Advisory Council member Amir Hossain Amu during his remand hearing was staged.
He made this claim during a press conference on Friday, the day after the incident on Friday.
Faruqi said that the person who claimed to be Amu's lawyer was not attacked by any state-appointed lawyer.
In fact, a scuffle broke out between two parties over the submission of multiple power of attorney documents on behalf of Amu in court.
One party then expelled the individual from the courtroom.
He further explained that the so-called lawyer was not Amu’s actual attorney, a fact confirmed by Amu's real lawyers.
The intention, he said, was to convince the public and the world that there is no law in the court.
He criticized that some individuals, even if not officially representing the defendant, have been disrupting the court environment with disruptive behavior.
He added that the defendant should have the right to choose who will represent them in court. If this happens, the public would be spared from confusion.
On Wednesday, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) announced the arrest of Amir Hossain Amu in connection with the murder of Abdul Wadud in the Nilkhet area during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
On Thursday, Amu was brought to the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza for a remand hearing.
During the hearing, a person claiming to be Amu's lawyer, Swapan Ray Chowdhury, called the prosecution's statement political. This led to a group of lawyers becoming agitated and attacking him in the courtroom.
