Eggs to be sold at govt-set prices from Thursday

Eggs will be sold at government-set prices from Thursday, to address the ongoing instability in the egg market.

It is expected that supplying 2 million eggs daily to the two main wholesale markets in the capital—Tejgaon and Kaptaan—will help stabilize prices.

Although this initiative will begin in Dhaka, it is believed to have a nationwide impact.

The program will be coordinated by the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPIC).

Major farms in the country will supply the eggs.

The Director General of the Directorate of the National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP), Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan, is set to inaugurate the initiative at Kaptaan Market at 4am.

Masiur Rahman, joint convenor of BPIC, stated that they are committed to selling eggs at government-fixed prices.

The Agriculture Marketing Directorate, Livestock Directorate, and poultry stakeholders have collectively determined the reasonable production costs and pricing at the producer, wholesale, and retail levels.

Due to recent floods caused by heavy rainfall, around one-fourth of the poultry farms in the country have been damaged, resulting in a daily production shortfall of 6 to 7 million eggs and creating an imbalance between demand and supply.

Masiur Rahman added that during this crisis, some groups attempted to exploit the situation for excessive profits, leading to instability in the egg market.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, BPIC has initiated a special program for 15 days, setting prices at Tk10.58 per egg from farms, Tk11.01 at wholesale, and Tk12 at retail.
