Workers block Nabinagar-Chandra highway for over 24 hours demanding due wages

Workers have blocked the Nabinagar-Chandra highway in Savar's Ashulia for more than 24 hours.

They started their sit-in on Monday morning demanding payment of arrears of salaries and dues, which continued till the filing of this report 10am on Tuesday.

Due to the blockade, a 13km tailback has been created on the road from Nabinagar to Kabirpur via Baipail.

Around 2,000 agitated workers of Birds Group's four factories — Birds RNR Fashions Ltd, Birds Garments, Birds FedEx and Birds A&Z Ltd — blocked the road after the group announced their closure without paying the workers’ dues.

Babu, a worker of Birds Group, said: "We were supposed to be paid on Monday, but instead they extended the deadline by three months and put up a notice saying the dues would be cleared after that period. How can the owners make such a decision without consulting us? There is no salary for the workers, and some officers may also have pending payments. Our service benefits, holiday pay, and other arrears were due on September 30.

"Suddenly, the factory, which was still operating, was shut down with a lay-off notice. Those with over one year of service will be compensated, while those with less than one year of service will also receive some compensation."

The factories of Birds Group in Baipayl were declared under lay-off on August 28, and later completely shut down when workers refused to stay on lay-off.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar Highway police station, Ayub Ali, said: "The same situation has persisted in Baipail since Monday. Traffic on the road is completely halted, and there are no alternative arrangements. Even if we take action, it will lead to other problems. What can we do?"
