Former justice Manik admitted to ICU in critical condition

Former Supreme Court Appellate Division Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik was severely injured in a physical assault at the Sylhet court premises and has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a hospital.

According to hospital sources, several injuries were found on the former justice's body on Saturday.

Sylhet Deputy Inspector General (DIG Prisons) Md Sagir Mia said that Justice Manik's condition is critical, with excessive internal bleeding due to the assault.

“One of his testicles has ruptured, and he is receiving treatment under strict security,” he said.

The doctor said that that the former justice's testicle was torn due to the assault and was subsequently operated on.

He also sustained many injuries and lacerations on his body and suffers from high blood pressure.

The army and police are providing security for the former justice, and security has been tightened around the hospital area.

Earlier in the afternoon, former justice Manik was brought to court under police escort.

As soon as he was taken out of the prison van, he was assaulted with punches and kicks.

Leaders and activists of various parties, including BNP, threw shoes, eggs, and water bottles at him.

The incident occurred at 4:10pm in the court premises, leaving him seriously injured.

After the hearing at 4:30pm, Sylhet Judicial Magistrate-1 Judge Alamgir Hossain ordered that Shamsuddin Manik be sent to prison.

Later, he was taken to Sylhet Central Jail under army and police escort.

He was shown arrested under Section 54 and produced before the court by the police.

The police said that no lawyer was present to represent Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik during the hearing.

Upon learning that the former justice was being brought to court, leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal and other affiliated groups gathered at the court premises from Saturday afternoon, chanting slogans demanding his execution.

Sylhet court police Inspector Jamshed Alam said: "Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik was arrested under Section 54 and sent to court by Kanaighat police station. He has cases filed in multiple stations, including Dhaka's Badda and Adabor, on various charges, including murder."

He added that the court has instructed that the accused be provided with all facilities according to the jail code, given his status as a former justice.

The accused informed the court of his physical illness. The court took this into consideration and directed that he be provided medical treatment as per the jail code, Jamshed Alam said.

On Friday night, former justice Manik was apprehended by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while attempting to cross into India through the Kanaighat (Dona) border in Sylhet.

He was handed over to Kanaighat police early on Saturday morning.
