Bangladesh Mobile Phone Consumers Association has demanded its abolition citing the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC) as a controversial body.
Mohiuddin Ahmed, president of the organization, made this demand in a statement sent to the media on Saturday.
In the statement, he said: “NTMC has violated the basic human rights of people. There have been complaints of hacking of citizens' mobile phones, keeping devices under surveillance, Facebook-Messenger, X, Telegram, Viber, IMO and Skype, even blocking websites and e-mails. It has become a controversial telecommunications monitoring station.”
Regarding protecting privacy, he said: "The activities of this organization are unconstitutional. Clause (b) of Article 43 of the Constitution guarantees the right to privacy in all forms of correspondence and communication. However, this company has not done any other work without eavesdropping to other apps."
Mohiuddin Ahmed claimed that NTMC has used terrible devices to eavesdrop. Even Pegasus spyware from Israel's intelligence agency Mossad was used.
At this time, the demand letter for abolition of NTMC will soon be given to the chief advisor of the current interim government, Dr Muhammad Yunus, according to the Bangladesh Cell Phone Consumers Association.
