Photo of Jubo Dal leader holding police weapon goes viral

A photo of a Jubo Dal leader holding a police weapon has gone viral on Facebook, with a burning police station in the background.

The image shows Tahsin Zaman alias Romel, secretary of Jubo Dal in Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur, holding a police weapon in front of a burning Vatara police station on August 5.

Some BNP leaders in Mathbaria upazila, who spoke to Prothom Alo on the condition of anonymity, said that seeing the photos of Tahsin Zaman with a weapon at the scene of the Vatara police station fire indicates his involvement in the unrest.

They believe his actions have tarnished the BNP's image, potentially leading the public to think BNP members were involved in such activities.

Riazul Islam, the former assistant secretary for Student Affairs of Mathbaria Upazila BNP and former general secretary of Chhatra Dal, said that after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, BNP's acting Chairman Tarique Rahman instructed party members to refrain from looting, arson, and other destructive activities.

Despite this, if someone is involved in such acts, organizational action should be taken against them for the sake of the party's image, he added.

Regarding the photo, Tahsin Zaman claimed that on August 5, at around 1:15pm, he arrived in front of Vatara police station with a procession of students and saw the crowd vandalizing and setting fire to the station.

Those who were part of the procession found some abandoned weapons on the road, which they later handed over to the army camp opposite the Vatara police station.

Multiple leaders of Mathbaria Upazila BNP expressed their embarrassment over the incident but declined to comment.

Abdul Monayem, president of the Central Committee of Jubo Dal, said that organizational action will be taken against Jubo Dal leader Tahsin Zaman regarding this incident.
