Senior police official resigns alleging years of illegal orders from Awami League ministers

A senior police official has tendered his resignation, citing years of having to follow illegal orders from ministers associated with the Awami League government.

The officer, Additional Deputy Inspector General Md Moniruzzaman, made these allegations in a resignation letter on Sunday.

He was stationed in the Khulna-Barisal region Tourist Police.

In the resignation letter, Moniruzzaman wrote: "Over the past 10 years, at various times, I was compelled to carry out illegal orders issued by ministers linked to the Awami League government. These orders, often brutal and barbaric, were designed to protect an unlawful regime and to prolong the power and financial gains of certain high-ranking officials."

The letter further detailed the devastating consequences of these orders.

Moniruzzaman claimed that under the direction of senior police officials, ground-level officers were forced to engage in violent actions, leading to the deaths of many innocent people, including children and teenagers. "In the name of safeguarding an illegal government, many have been killed," he said. "As a result, the Bangladesh Police Force has become a public enemy."

Saying that police has become a symbol of public hatred, he wrote: "I realize that it is no longer appropriate for me to continue working in the Bangladesh Police Force. I do not wish to serve as a figure of hatred among the people of Bangladesh. Therefore, I have voluntarily resigned from my position."

Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government, scores of top officials from different government organizations have resigned amid student protest.
