GCC councillor sent to jail in railway sabotage case

A Gazipur court on Thursday sent a Gazipur City Corporation councillor to jail in a case filed over railway sabotage on December 13, 2023.

The accused, Shaheen Alam, councillor of ward-19 of Gazipur City Corporation, was sent to jail in the case in the afternoon, said Gazipur PBI Superintendent of Police Maksuder Rahman.

“Shaheen Alam was arrested at the airport while trying to leave for Singapore by the immigration police. Later, PBI officers took him into custody. He was sent to jail on Thursday afternoon through a court proceeding,” he said.

“38 hours after the train accident, a case was filed under the Special Powers Act.  Police arrested seven people, including GCC's ward councillor Hasan Ajmal Bhuiyan, in connection with the train dreailment incident. Five of the seven accused gave confessional statements to the Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. Shaheen Alam's name came up in their statement,” added the Gazipur PBI official.

On December 13, 2023, a man was killed and 10 people were injured as the Dhaka-bound Mohanganj Express derailed at Bankharia (Chilai river) bridge of Gazipur on the Dhaka-Mymensingh railway.

Seven coaches, along with the engine, collapsed on the low ground next to the railway track.
