In the wake of the recent rape incident at Jahangirnagar University (JU), the Chhatra League committee finds itself on the brink of dissolution.
On Monday, while speaking with reporters at the Awami League Dhanmondi Party office, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said the party is taking strong measures against the rape incident at JU.
“Not everyone in a party can be virtuous, but we do not condone wrongdoing. Any criminal activity should be dealt with according to the law. No one has been spared for committing crimes while we are in power. We have also decided to dissolve the student organization of the Chhatra League at Jahangirnagar University,” Quader said.
He continued: “The Awami League is such a large party, but we are not sparing anyone involved in criminal activities. We have taken action against the murderers of Abrar in Buet, the murderers of Biswajit Das, and now we will take action against the rape incident at Jahangir University. No one will go unpunished.”
The main accused, Mustafizur Rahman, a student of Jahangirnagar University Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall who was the international affairs secretary of the JU Chhatra League unit, has been suspended from the student wing of the Awami League. He was arrested along with his associates by the Ashulia police.
The police have so far detained four people, including Mostafizur, over the incident.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Bangladesh Chhatra League President Saddam Hussain said: “We are very concerned about the incident that occurred on Saturday night at Jahangirnagar University. We have instantly expelled the accused from the Chhatra League. We seek justice over this incident. The accused person has already been arrested and taken into remand. We are always ready to stand with the victims.”
In response to a question, Saddam said: “If the accused are backed by any leader of JU BCL, we will also take stern action against them. If needed, we will remove them from the JU BCL committee.”
Sheikh Wali Asif Enan, general secretary of the Chhatra League, agreed with Saddam and said: “There is no room for culprits in BCL.”
The students of JU began protesting in front of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall almost immediately after news of the incident spread on Saturday night.
Protesters and general students claim that the accused committed this atrocity because they feel protected as they are involved with the ruling party’s student wing.
Chhatra League top leaders denied this allegation and said not only the general students, but also the leaders and activists of JU Chhatra League protested on campus after the heinous crime.
