Police: Man who tried to enter Khaleda’s cabin wanted to take a photo

The man, Sujan Pal, who tried to enter BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s cabin at the capital’s Evercare Hospital, wanted to take a picture of her, said police.

During interrogation, Sujan Pal said he was a member of Chhatra Dal in 2018 and has been living in Dhaka for two months to see Khaleda Zia, Vatara police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mainul Islam told media.

He wanted to see and take a picture of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is undergoing treatment at the hospital, he said.

In this regard, Rajan Kumar Saha, assistant commissioner (Badda Zone), said:  "During interrogation, Sujan Pal told police officials that he is now a supporter of the BNP. A case was filed against Sujan with Faridpur's Charbhadrasan police station in 2018.”

While talking to his family, police also got to know that Sujan is not mentally stable. They have visited two psychiatric doctors in Pabna and Faridpur for him. Sujan’s family gave the documents to police officers, he said.

“Sujan's words were incoherent during the interrogation as well,” the official added.

On December 26, Sujan was sent to jail by a Dhaka court.

On December 24, the same court granted a two-day remand for Sujan.

Sujan was detained for trying to enter Khaleda Zia’s hospital cabin without permission on December 23. He was turned over to the police by hospital authorities.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi expressed deep concern about the attempt.

The 78-year-old former prime minister has been suffering from various ailments, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung, heart, and eye problems.

The BNP chairperson has been undergoing treatment at the hospital since August 9 for various health complications.

Since her conditional release from jail in 2020, the BNP chief has been receiving treatment at the hospital under a medical board headed by cardiologist Prof Shahabuddin Talukder.

Khaleda was sent to the Old Dhaka Jail after a lower court sentenced her to five years imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018. Later, she was found guilty in another corruption case the same year.

Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the government temporarily freed Khaleda Zia from jail through an executive order suspending her sentence on March 25, 2020, with the condition that she stay in her Gulshan house and not leave the country.
