Bhairab train crash: Case filed against two train drivers, guard

A case has been filed against two train drivers and a guard in connection with the train collision in Bhairab, Kishoreganj on Monday, which resulted in 17 deaths.

Bhairab Railway police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alim Hossain Sikder confirmed the case, filed by a victim's brother Billal Hossain on Tuesday night.

The accused are container train driver, Jahangir Alam, assistant driver Atiqur Rahman and train guard Alamgir Hossain. Besides, those involved in the management of the freight train have also been charged.

On Monday evening, at least 17 people were killed and dozens were injured when a cargo train rammed into two bogies of a passenger train at Bhairab Rail Station in Kishoreganj.

The accident took place at 3:50pm when the cargo train hit the Dhaka-bound Egarosindhur Godhuli Express, which was coming from Kishoreganj. 

At least 15 bodies, out of 17 have been handed over to the families. 

According to Bangladesh Railway (BR), the Egarosindhur Express, a passenger train, arrived at Bhairab Rail Station from Kishoreganj and stopped to change direction. At around 3:30pm, the passenger train left the station to switch to the Dhaka-bound track. But just before it completed the switch, a Chittagong-bound container train collided with the last three carriages of the Egarosindhur Express.

The Chittagong-bound container train had overshot the signal, the DG added.
