A sixth-grade student was crushed to death when a mound collapsed on her house during heavy rainfall while she was sleeping in Sylhet's Khadim tea garden on Saturday morning.
The deceased was Archana Chhotri, 11, daughter of Bulbul Chhotri.
Khadimnagar union’s Ward No nine Member Ataur Rahman said: “Archana died when the soil of the mound collapsed due to continuous rain. Locals managed to rescue Bulbul Chhotri, his wife, and their four-year-old child. However, Archana could not be found at that time. It took about two hours for the locals to rescue her inside the house.”
Sylhet Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nasrin Akter said: “People in hilly and foothill areas were alerted due to heavy rains in Sylhet for two days. This caution has been reiterated several times, and it continues today (Saturday). However, a child died in the early morning when a mound collapsed.”
“Upon receiving the news, I, along with the upazila chairman and local public representatives, visited the child's home. The district administration has provided an initial assistance of Tk10,000, with an additional Tk10,000 to be given,” he added.
