Lawyer calls ACC case against Dr Yunus baseless

Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun, the lawyer of Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus, on Thursday said that the ACC case against Dr Yunus is completely intentional and baseless.

Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus appeared in the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in response to summons for questioning in a case filed over alleged misappropriation of Tk25.22 crore from the company's Workers Profit Participation Fund around 9am on Thursday.

After two and a half hours of questioning, around 11:30am Dr Yunus left the ACC office. His lawyer later gave the information to the journalists.

ACC Deputy Director Gulshan Anwar Pradhan is investigating the case filed by ACC on charges of embezzlement and smuggling of Tk25.22 crore of Grameen Telecom.

On September 27, 2023, he sent a letter summoning 13 people including Dr Muhammad Yunus. The letter asked him to appear on Thursday.

On May 30, the ACC made the case against 13 people including Dr Muhammad Yunus at the ACC's integrated district office Dhaka-1. In the case, allegations of embezzlement and money laundering of Tk22.22 crore were made.

Before this, on July 23, 2022, the Department of Inspection of Factories and Institutions sent an official letter to the ACC to investigate the allegation of embezzlement of workers' money against Dr Muhammad Yunus.

According to the complaint, most of the transactions of Grameen Telecom since 1996 are suspicious. Not only that, the organization also wanted an investigation into the money laundering allegations made by the workers to the ILO.
