In the future the railway system in Bangladesh is set to grow even further, said Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan has said.
"Our journey began with the introduction of modern, air-conditioned luggage systems, aimed at easing the transportation of medicines, agricultural products, flowers, fruits, medicines, vaccines, and other goods for the marginalized people."
He made these remarks during the inauguration of modern luggage vans on intercity trains at Kamalapur Railway Station at around 11:20am on Sunday.
Currently, there are a total of 16 intercity trains equipped with modern luggage vans.
The railways minister mentioned that the ticketing system for the transportation of goods at stations would be the same process through which passengers get tickets.
The modern luggage vans will operate on 12 routes including Dhaka to Chittagong, Sylhet, Mohanganj, Kishoreganj, Jamalpur, Dewanganj, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rangpur and Chittagong to Sylhet, Mymensingh.
At the supply level, there are a total of 75 luggage vans available.
These vans have different carrying capacities, with meter gauge general luggage vans capable of carrying 17.4 tons and meter gauge AC luggage vans having a carrying capacity of 12.8 tons.
The number of luggage vans at the supply level is 75. The carrying capacity of meter gauge general luggage van is 17.4 metric tons. The carrying capacity of a meter gauge AC luggage van is 12.8 metric tons.
