Joint Commissioner (JC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Biplob Kumar Sarkar has categorically said that the personal liability of any police personnel can't be pressed on the whole police department.
“Police force will not bear the liability of additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Harun or Rashid,” he told the journalists at his office here on Monday.
Biplob said that a six-member delegation comprising the president and general secretary of Chhatra League came to the DMP Headquarters and met commissioner in this connection.
A victim of the incident was also accompanied with the delegation.
The Chhatra League leaders expressed their dismay along with several demands on behalf of the organization.
During the meeting, the DMP Commissioner told the BCL leaders that Bangladesh Police is a very professional organization. “Bangladesh Police will not bear the liability of any individual. This is quite clear.”
Additional Deputy Commissioner Harun or Rashid has been suspended over the torture of two leaders of the ruling party’s student wing at Shahbagh police station in Dhaka.
A notification was issued in this regard on Monday afternoon.
Earlier, a three-member committee was formed on Monday afternoon to look into the allegation of torture.
The committee was also asked to submit its report within two working days.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Harun or Rashid of DMP’s Ramna Division was transferred to the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) on Sunday.
Earlier, he was withdrawn from his post and reassigned to the DMP's Public Order Management Division on Sunday, following allegations of his involvement in the assault of two leaders belonging to the Central Committee of the Chhatra League.
According to reports, the incident occurred when ADC Harun took the two Chhatra League leaders to the Shahbagh police station on Saturday.
The duo are Anwar Hossain Nayeem, Chhatra League central organizing secretary and president of the Dhaka University (DU) Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall unit, and Sharif Ahmed Munim, the central science affairs secretary and general secretary of DU Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall unit.
