Bangladesh exports 2,700 tons of mangoes to 34 countries

Bangladesh has exported 2,700 tons of mangoes this year, which is 1,000 tons more than in 2022.

Last year, a total of 1,757 tons of mangoes were exported, according to a Ministry of Agriculture press release issued on Friday.

Mangoes were exported to 28 countries in 2022, but this year the number has risen to 34.

Among the countries, the United Kingdom imported 1,256 tons, Italy 296 tons, Saudi Arabia 260 tons, the United Arab Emirates 137 tons, Qatar 111 tons, Singapore 55 tons, Switzerland 14 tons, Germany 70 tons, France 85 tons, Sweden 65 tons, Kuwait 218 tons, and Canada 40 tons.

Despite producing nearly 2.5 million tons of mangoes annually, the export quantity is significantly lower compared to production.

Only 232 tons were exported in 2017-18, 310 tons in 2018-19, 283 tons in 2019-20, 1,632 tons in 2020-21, and 1,757 tons in 2021-22 have been exported.

Even though there is a high demand for the country's mangoes in the global market, the amount of mango exported is low due to a lack of adherence to international standards in mango production and packaging.

Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture is implementing a project to increase the production of exportable mangoes.

This project includes providing assistance to farmers in various areas, including best agricultural practices and mango production.

As a result of this project, in the first year alone, there has been an increase of 1,000 tons of mangoes exported compared to last year.

Project Director Md Arifur Rahman said that the mango exports will continue for another 15-20 days this year.
