24 Buet students arrested in Tanguar Haor granted bail

Thirty-two people, including 24 current Buet and seven former Buet students, were granted bail on Wednesday in a case filed after police arrested them when they were on a trip to Sunamganj's Tanguar Haor on July 30.

On Wednesday afternoon, when the 32 defendants applied for bail Judge Farhan Sadik of Judicial Magistrate Court-4 in Sunamganj granted them bail.

Among them, the two arrested were under 18 years of age and their bail will be sought in the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.

Taibur Rahman Babul, the lawyer of the defendants, said: “The defendants are talented students of the country. Police cannot ruin the future of so many brilliant students over suspicion. All of them are children of established families.”

Thirty-four students, including 24 from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), were taken into police custody on Monday on charges of “conspiracy against the government and apprehension of violation of public safety.”

Police picked them up from a boat in the Patlai River when they were headed to the Tekerghat tourist spot on Sunday, according to media reports and police sources.
