The Detective Branch (DB) of police on Tuesday said they are investigating the motive of those who carried out an attack on Dhaka-17 independent candidate Ashraful Hossen Alom, popularly known as Hero Alom, in Dhaka's Banani area.
“We are investigating the motive of those who carried out the attack by holding the badge around their neck during the incident,” DB chief Harun-or-Rashid disclosed the information at a press briefing on Tuesday.
Till now, seven people have been detained in connection to the attack.
However, no case has been filed in this case so far. Police are waiting for Hero Alom's formal complaint, Harun-or-Rashid said.
He said the attack on Hero Alom was an isolated incident which took place within three to four minutes. “We are investigating this matter. We already got some other names. We are looking into that.”
He said police are investigating if the attackers were intentionally wearing the badge of a certain party while carrying out the attack. “We are trying to find out and investigate whether the people holding a team badge belonged to a third party.”
Meanwhile, the UN office in Bangladesh has expressed concerns over the attacks on Hero Alom.
Additionally, the US also sought an investigation into reports of violence over attacks on Hero Alom.
The US wants the investigation to be conducted "thoroughly, transparently, and impartially, and to hold the perpetrators of violence to account.”
Ruling Awami League candidate Mohammad A Arafat, who made a landslide victory, condemned the attack and demanded exemplary punishment against those miscreants who were involved in this incident.
“If the attackers were from our party, they will get organizational punishment and law enforcement agencies will do their job," he said.
