DT fact check: Rousseau Kazi’s Threads app not affiliated with Meta

A recent story circulating on Facebook and online newspapers has claimed that Rousseau Kazi, a person of Bangladeshi origin, is the CEO and co-founder of Threads, an app supposedly developed by tech giant Meta.

However, it is crucial to clarify that Rousseau Kazi's app, Threads, has no affiliation with Meta whatsoever. In reality, Threads is an entirely distinct application specifically designed for makers, serving as a replacement for Slack software. It can be found on both Google Play and the Apple Store.

After conducting an independent investigation, Dhaka Tribune has discovered that the Twitter account associated with Rousseau Kazi's Threads app has explicitly stated its lack of affiliation with Meta. The Twitter handle states: "Also, we have no affiliation with Meta. But you're welcome to stick around!"

Recognizing the irony, Threads humorously shared a well-known Spider-Man meme, acknowledging the connection between their app's name and Meta's platform.

Who is Rousseau Kazi?

Rousseau Kazi, a proud descendant of Bangladeshi immigrants, has gained significant popularity through his brainchild, Threads.

Kazi exhibited exceptional capabilities, graduating early from UC Berkeley in the USA and securing an internship at Facebook, according to reports from The Statesman. Impressed by his skills, he earned a permanent position at the young age of 21.

Over a span of six years, Kazi made valuable contributions to various teams and platforms at Facebook. Notably, he was involved with the Facebook Workplace app during his tenure.

Now, Kazi's creation, Threads, stands as a formidable competitor to Facebook's Workplace. He credits the original concept of the app to his two sisters, who played an instrumental role in its development.

It is important to clarify the facts and dispel any misconceptions surrounding Rousseau Kazi's Threads app and its association with Meta.
