Members of Rapid Action Battalion-12 have arrested a man, seven months after he murdered a shopkeeper named Zakirul Islam in Bogra's Dhunot upazila over a Tk500 debt.
The suspect, Jahangir Hossain, 22, was apprehended on Saturday night from the Sreepur bus stand in the Ashulia region of Dhaka and handed over to the Dhunot police station on Sunday evening, confirmed RAB-12 Squad Commander Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nazrul Islam.
According to RAB-12 sources, Jahangir Hossain and Zakirul Islam became friends when they used to live in Dhunot.
Both of them worked as labourers in Ashulia EPZ in Dhaka for some time.
Zakirul Islam had borrowed Tk500 from Hossain during this time.
When they both returned to Dhunot, Zakirul Islam opened a grocery store and Jahangir became one of his customers, accruing a debt of Tk2,600 for goods purchased on credit.
Tensions escalated when Zakirul requested repayment on December 9 last year.
Later that night, Jahangir went to Zakirul's shop, violently dragged him out and beat him to death with a stick. Following the incident, Jahangir Hossain had been in hiding.
Zakirul's brother, Jahangir Alam, lodged a murder case against Jahangir Hossain at Dhunot police station two days after the incident, on December 11.
With the help of information technology, the RAB officers traced the location of the accused and carried out the arrest.
Dhunot police station Officer-in-Charge Robiul Islam said that Jahangir Hossain will be presented before the court on Monday, and they will apply for remand if necessary.
