Labour leader Shahidul Islam was killed in Tongi, Gazipur due to a dispute between local leaders and activists of Bangladesh Garment Workers Trade Union and Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation.
Law enforcement sources revealed that the dispute revolved around issues of salaries, bonuses, and the expansion of dominance by labour unions.
So far, six suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder. Industrial police sources said that one of the arrested individuals has confessed to the incident and provided detailed information about others involved and instigators behind the incident.
Investigation is underway to determine if those involved have any political affiliations.
The deceased Shahidul Islam was the president of Gazipur district branch of Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation.
Officials said that the incident took place at the Prince Jacquard Sweater Limited factory in Satish Baganbari area of Gazipur Metropolitan Police on June 25, where workers expressed dissatisfaction over Eid bonuses and arrears.
During a protest, Shahidul and four other labour leaders were attacked while returning home. Shahidul succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
A murder case was filed with Tongi west police station by Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation, represented by their central President Kalpana Akhter.
The dispute began when workers at the garment factory sought Shahidul's help to address salary and bonus issues.
However, leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Workers Trade Union, another workers' organization, did not react positively.
This organization, in coordination with local political figures, continued to exert dominance in various factories.
Additional DIG Crime Masood Ahmed assured that the police were diligently investigating the case and were determined to bring all the culprits to justice. Six individuals have already been arrested, and no one involved in this incident will be exempted from legal consequences.
