Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury has made history on Wednesday by getting elected as the next mayor of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC).
The Awami League leader come to be known as a popular and smart political leader after overcoming many setbacks of grassroots politics due to his innate leadership skills.
Politics and public service have always been at the forefront of his thoughts and consciousness.
On Wednesday, Anwaruzzaman secured 68,293 more votes than his nearest competitor, proving his mettle.
His personal pursuits have never taken precedence over his dedication to the cause. He actively participated in various movements and stood alongside workers on the streets.
In the face of adversity, he tirelessly organized and rallied the team, without compromising his unwavering loyalty to the party.
Born on June 1, 1970, in a respected Muslim family in the West Tilapara village of Burunga Bazar union, Osmaninagar upazila, Sylhet, Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury is the youngest of six brothers.
His father, Nausha Mia Chowdhury, and mother, Mocha Gahinunnecha Chowdhury, instilled in him strong values and principles.
During his secondary school years, he found great inspiration in the life of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his political philosophy. It was during this time that he actively engaged in Chhatra League politics.
Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury received his primary education from West Tilapara Government Primary School, secondary education from Burunga High School, and completed his HSC from Sylhet Government College. Later, he pursued a bachelor's degree in the United Kingdom. In addition to his academic and political endeavours, he actively participated in various social and cultural organizations.
He fulfilled numerous organizational responsibilities within Moushumi Samajkalyan Sangh and Sports Hall across the country.
As the social service secretary of Balaganj Chhatra League, he remained devoted to his political organizational duties.
Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury was elected as the student assembly secretary in the Sylhet Government College Chhatra Sangsad election. Moreover, he played an active role in the anti-dictatorship movement in Sylhet in 1990.
Despite residing abroad for some time, his love for the country and its people never waned. While involved in politics overseas, he served as the general secretary of London Metropolitan Jubo League and later assumed the positions of general secretary and president of the United Kingdom Jubo League.
Subsequently, he was nominated as a member of the Central Jubo League. Transitioning from Jubo League politics, he directly assumed the role of joint general secretary of the United Kingdom Awami League and held the position of Interim acting general secretary on various occasions.
Alongside his international political engagements, he remained actively involved in domestic politics, maintaining constant connections.
