A Cox's Bazar court on Sunday sentenced the pickup truck driver, Saidul Islam Sifat, to life imprisonment for the killing of six brothers by running them over in Cox's Bazar.
Besides the life sentence, the convict has to pay a fine of Tk1 lakh, with a default penalty of a further six months in jail in case of non-payment.
Cox's Bazar District Sessions and Judges Court Judge Mohammad Ismail delivered the verdict, confirmed Public Prosecutor Faridul Alam.
Faridul Alam stated that the case was quickly resolved due to its high-profile nature.
“It was unequivocally established as a case of homicide. The entire process was completed and a verdict was delivered in just one year and four months,” he added.
Earlier, on February 12, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Saidul Islam Sifat from Dhaka's Mohammadpur area.
On the morning of February 8, 2022, nine brothers and sisters went to the cremation ground on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway in Malumghat Ringvang area of Dulahazara union of Chakaria upazila to pay their respects to their late father.
The six brothers were killed after they were hit by a pickup truck on their way home.
Pallab Sushil, brother of the deceased, filed a case against the pickup driver at Chakaria police station.
The case was initially handed over to the Highway Police for investigation but was later handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
