Karwan Bazar traders refused to move to Jatbari and Aminbazar areas in Dhaka after being asked to do so by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) authorities.
They have also demanded that DNCC renovate the Karwan Bazar market.
DNCC held a meeting with leaders and traders' associations regarding the relocation of the market in Dhaka on Thursday.
They asked the Karwan Bazar traders to move as the buildings are dangerous and prone to major accidents.
During the meeting, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said that there is no wholesale market for perishable goods in any developed country's capital city.
Hence, to build Smart Bangladesh, the Karwan Bazar market may be relocated to Jatrabari and Aminbazar.
The mayor also assured the traders that they will be allocated the same amount of space for the new market.
He added that an 11-member committee will be formed to evaluate the overall situation.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said the governmentt does not want to forcefully transfer the Karwan Bazar market, neither it wants to disrupt businesses.
On May 11, DNCC officials came under fire from traders when the city corporation officials went to conduct an operation to seal the hazardous warehouse market building in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar.
The officials visited the warehouse and granted the traders a two-week deadline to relocate the shops situated on the second floor of the building.
In January 2019, the building was declared abandoned.
After talking to the businessmen, it was decided to shift the 176 shops on the second floor to Jatrabari. However, the shops were not removed despite sending several notices.
