Hyena bites off 2-year-old’s hand at Mirpur zoo

A hyena has bit off a 2-year-old child's hand at Bangladesh National Zoo in Dhaka's Mirpur area.

The incident took place at around 12pm on Thursday.

The hyena attacked the child's right hand when he put it inside the cage.

The child, Saif, has already undergone one surgery at Dhaka's National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopadic Rehabilitation.

The initial expenses of the treatment were borne by the zoo authorities.

Saif's father, an RMG worker, said they went to visit the zoo from Gazipur's Ashulia. “Saif got down from his mother's lap and ran towards the hyena's cage. The hyena attacked him when he put his hand inside.”

The Assistant Director of the zoo, Mujibur Rahman, said: “Immediately after the incident, we made all arrangements for the treatment of the child. All kinds of security measures have been strengthened.”

The severed part of the child's hand could not be found, he added.

The hyena's cage is surrounded by a seven-foot iron fence. There is also a security fence with iron rods a few feet before it, according to media reports.
