At least 15 people were injured in a clash between the ruling Awami League and BNP in Dhaka's Keraniganj upazila on Friday.
Witnesses said the altercation began when BNP leaders threw brickbats at the Awami League's South Keraniganj office during a protest rally at around 11am.
MI Mamun, a local leader of the Awami League in Keraniganj, pointed the finger at Nipun Roy Chowdhury, the general secretary of the BNP Dhaka district unit, accusing her of instigating the attack.
He claimed: "Today (Friday), the BNP held a nationwide protest rally. Prominent BNP members, including Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, were in attendance at the Keraniganj rally.
“The BNP men started throwing brickbats at our office while passing by. At one stage, they forced their way into our office and attacked our members. I have video footage where Nipun Roy can be seen throwing stones at us and then running away."
According to Mamun, 15-20 Awami League leaders and activists were wounded in the attack.
He further said four to five of the most seriously injured have been admitted to a local hospital.
A video of the incident seen by Dhaka Tribune shows BNP leaders, including Nipun Roy Chowdhury, ordering their party members to attack the office.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Keraniganj circle) Md Shahabuddin Kabir denied the allegations by the Awami League men.
He said: "No such clash took place. The BNP rally concluded peacefully without any disruptions. We were there the entire time.”
Meanwhile, Dhaka district Additional Police Superintendent Aminul Islam acknowledged some disorderly conduct by a handful of BNP workers.
He said that additional police have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident following the clash.
