Moulvibazar’s Rohima elected chair of council in London’s Newham

A well-known face of London's Bangladeshi community, Rohima Rahman, has been elected as the chair of the council of Newham Council, the country's second-largest Bangladeshi borough.

She was elected as the chair of the council by a direct vote of councilors elected at Newham Council's annual general meeting on Monday.

During her tenure, she will be considered the first citizen of the borough. She is also a four-time elected councilor of Newham Council.

The newly elected Chair of the Council Rohima Rahman was born in Moulvibazar.

Her husband is Moulvibazar district unit Chhatra League's ex-president Mujibur Rahman Jasim. He is also a two-time elected councilor of Newham Council.

Rohima Rahman along with other family members came to England in 1987 as her father was abroad for work. She spent her childhood and adolescence in Newham.

She graduated from ULA in 1993 with a degree in Business and Finance. In 2008, she completed her post-graduate in Politics at Birkbeck University of London.

Rohima actively joined the Labour Party in 1998. She published various articles on the development of London and Newham in various mainstream newspapers.

In 2001, she got married to Mujibur Rahman Jasim.

Rohima Rahman asked for everyone's prayers and cooperation and said that during her term of office, she will aim to make Newham Council's civic services more accessible to the public.

Rohima expressed that since childhood, she has harbored a dream of working toward the well-being of underprivileged people. In the future, she wants to work tirelessly for the benefit of the people of the community and go further.

Councilor Mujibur Rahman Jasim, Rohima's husband, told Bangla Tribune: “Undoubtedly, she (Rohima) will inspire the new generation of Bangladeshis.”
