Macaw hatched at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Sreepur, Gazipur.
The park authorities came to know about the birth of the bird about a week ago. They said that the birth of a macaw bird has never been heard before anywhere in the country.
Assistant Forest Conservator Rafiqul Islam, the officer in-charge of the park, said on Monday that macaw birds live in the Amazon forest of South America. The bird is found in the forests of Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Venezuela, and Bolivia.
Macaws lay eggs and hatch babies if they are given a very quiet and good environment. This bird lives for 20-30 years in nature but 30-50 years in a confined environment, according to the ornithologist of the park.
They survive by eating fruits and weighs from 1-1.5kg. The bird lays three eggs together. In most cases, one to two are born after about 28 days of fertilization.
Imran Ahmed, project director of the wildlife and nature conservation area of the forest department, said: “This is the first case of the birth of a macaw bird in the country. I asked to pay special attention to the bird. We are happy and encouraged.”
