The letter, sent to an organizer of Mongol Shobhajatra threatening an attack on the event during the Pohela Boishakh, was only a prank and not sent by militants, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq.
He came up with the comments while talking to reporters at Ramna Batamul in the capital on Thursday after inspecting the security management ahead of the Pohela Boishakh celebration.
The commissioner said: “An organization named ‘Dajjal Bahini' sent the letter. There is no militant organization in the country under this name nor any party.”
“We spoke to the organizers of the Mongol Shobhajatra, they have no reason to worry. The incident is still under investigation. Adequate security arrangements will also be in place,” he added.
All kinds of security arrangements will be made by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to make this year's Pahela Boishakh event enjoyable.
Khandkar Golam Farooq said that there will be security measures at all the places where the New Year will be organized, including Ramna, TSC, Dhaka University, Jagannath University, and Rabindra Sarobar in Dhanmondi.
He said: “There will be nine gates for entering and exiting Ramna Batamul. Among those, people would enter through four gates. None is allowed to enter with bags. Besides, people are only allowed inside Ramna between 6am-4pm. There will be three levels of security besides the police and various units.”
Regarding the two fugitive convicts who were whisked from the court, the commissioner said: “Although two militants managed to escape but 10 militants have also been arrested. Still, we have kept those two people under surveillance. They will be arrested soon.”
A general diary was filed on Tuesday night with Shahbagh police after organizers of Mongol Shobhajatra reportedly received a letter threatening an attack on the event during the Pohela Boishakh celebrations on Friday.
Abatahi Rahman, an organizer of the event, filed the GD, said Nur Mohammad, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh police station.
