Naogaon custodial death: NHRC sends letter to home ministry for investigation

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday sent a letter to the home ministry asking to investigate the death of a land office staff member named Sultana Jasmine who died in RAB custody after being arrested from Naogaon district town.

The commission termed the death of a woman in Naogaon RAB custody as a serious crime and gross violation of human rights.

It also asked the authorities concerned to investigate the matter through any other police unit except RAB and also asked to submit a detailed report.

This information was disclosed in the press release of the NHRC on Monday.

Sultana Jasmine was an office assistant at the land office of Chandipur Union of Naogaon Sadar Upazila.

RAB claimed that they detained her for interrogation on charges of fraud, and that they had found evidence of abnormal transactions in her bank account.

The commission considers this incident a gross violation of human rights.

In this situation, the senior secretary of the home ministry has been asked to investigate the matter related to the death in custody through any other police unit except RAB and give a detailed report.

The victim, Sultana Jasmine, 45, died three days after she had been detained by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from Naogaon town on Wednesday. She died while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Friday morning.

Later, she fell sick and died. Quoting doctors, RAB said she had a stroke. RAB officials claimed that they had not taken her to any camp for interrogation.

However, family members alleged Jasmine died due to torture in RAB custody.
