A young man, who left his house in Comilla to join al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, surrendered to the police on Tuesday after calling the National Emergency Service number 999.
The police said the young man, who addressed himself as a militant, called 999 to return to normal life.
According to the police, the young man called 999 and expressed his desire to surrender.
He told the police he left his home with some money to join Ansar Al Islam Fil Hindal Sharqiya for hijrat (to migrate from one place to another place) on December 27.
After that he stayed in various messes of Bashundhara, Uttarkhan and Dakshinkhan in Dhaka.
He was supposed to go to Cox's Bazar for training. At one point, he realized his mistake and escaped from the militant hideout.
Later he got shelter in the Uttarkhan police station area.
He had been wanting to return to normal life but was afraid that if caught by militant members, he might be killed. After giving this information, he expressed his desire to surrender. He called 999 at 11:45am.
Constable Joy Biswas received the call and immediately reported the matter to Yasir Arafat, ADC of Uttar Khan Zone.
Upon receiving the information, Uttarkhan police rescued the young man from the Kotbari Atipara area.
Later, the OC of Uttarkhan police station informed the receiver of the 999 call that they had rescued the 26-year-old young man and brought him to the police station.
An inquiry and legal action will be taken in this regard, he added.
