Report: 98 killed in 24,000 fire incidents reported in Bangladesh last year

A total of 24,102 fire incidents were reported across Bangladesh in 2022, according to a report.

During these incidents, at least 98 people were killed and 407 wounded. Of the deceased, 13 were fire service officials.

Bangladesh Fire Services and Civil Defense headquarters revealed the information on Monday morning in the annual statistics on fires and accidents. 

According to the report, properties worth over Tk342 crore were damaged in due to fire incidents across the country. 

The estimated value of the recovered property was around Tk1,808 crore.

Besides, 9,517 fires were brought under control before the fire service reached the spot, the report said.

According to the report, of the deceased, 72 were men and 13 were women. 

In addition, a total of 407 people were injured in these fires, among whom, 303 were men and 74 were women. Among the injured, there were 30 members of fire service. 

Annual statistics showed that 38.48% of the fires in the country were caused by electrical short circuits.

Fire from thrown-away lit cigarette butts accounted for 16.08% of the fire incidents while burners were responsible for 13.98% of fires.

Moreover, some 16.97% of fires occurred due to unknown causes, the report said. 

The report also said some 1,556 people called the Fire Service for help due to accidents in ponds and rivers.

These accidents killed 938 people and injured 144. All of whom were rescued. Besides, 530 animals and birds have been rescued from 514 accidents.

In addition, 13,168 people were injured in 11,911 other accidents. 

Moreover, 2,522 people were killed in these accidents while 10 fire service personnel were injured.
