Law minister: Parliamentary elections to be held as per constitution

Law Minister Anisul Huq on Saturday said that the upcoming 12th national parliamentary election will be held as per the country's constitution.

The law minister said this in response to questions from journalists after the inauguration of the 10th Orientation Course organized for the promoted District and Sessions Judges at the Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI) in Dhaka on Saturday.

He said that the national parliamentary elections are held only during the tenure of the government that is in power.

The support and assistance required by the Election Commission for the smooth conduct of these elections and the government departments under their jurisdiction will be conducted under the direction of the commission, said the minister.

And the government will work in a day to day routine. Elections will be held in that manner, said Anisul.

He further said: “The caretaker government has been declared illegal by the court. The Fifteenth amendment was also made on the basis of this judgment. I don't see the possibility of a caretaker government coming back."

When asked about the circumstances centring the incident of lawyers arguing with the judges in Brahmanbaria, Anisul said: "You (media) are saying that it is happening again and again. I will say, now as the matter is coming to the attention of the media, it was not like this before. Such incidents happen often in the bar (Ainjibi Samity).”

“Sometimes, it is the seniors of the bar who resolve it. Sometimes it is solved by the District Judge. But it is very unfortunate that an incident occurred beyond his jurisdiction. We are trying to solve this problem,” he said.

The minister further said: “I've said it before, and I'm still saying it, the bar and the bench are more like a family." It is not unusual for such incidents to happen here. But we do not want this to happen. I think those who are involved with this incident will solve this incident.”

In response to the question whether the two judges will remain there as a result of the boycott of the court, he said "Judiciary is independent, the chief justice and the GA Committee of the Supreme Court transfer judges…Now it is under their jurisdiction. I will not say anything there.”

When asked about a rumor that the law minister is going to be the president in the future, the law minister said: "Don't listen to rumours."
