PM Hasina: AL would have formed Aziz-style EC if it intended to steal votes

If Awami League had any intention of stealing votes, then it would have formed an Aziz-style Election Commission as Khaleda Zia did during her rule, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said.

“But we (Awami League) did not do that as we have confidence and trust in the people. We work based on the faith people have in us, ” she said while inaugurating the 22nd national council of one of the subcontinent's largest political parties, the Bangladesh Awami League.

Referring to various measures taken by Awami League, including enactment of the new law to appoint the chief election commissioner and commissioners for the Election Commission, she assured all of holding the next general election in a free and fair manner.

“We know many would say a lot of things about the polls. Many would even want to make the issue controversial,” she observed.

The prime minister later noted that the president formed the Election Commission by forming a search committee first. “Awami League does not interfere there. We have made the Election Commission completely independent.”

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been re-elected as the Awami League president, and Obaidul Quader has been re-elected as party general secretary.

Amir Hossain Amu made the proposal for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Mistafizur Rahman

With this, Sheikh Hasina has been re-elected as the party chief for the 10th consecutive term, and Obaidul Quader has been re-elected as the general secretary for the third time.

The Election Commission of the party announced the names in the second session of the 22nd national council at Engineers Institution in the capital on Saturday.
