Rights body condemns BNP leader attending mother’s funeral in handcuffs

The National Human Rights Commission criticized the authorities concerned over letting a BNP leader attend his mother's funeral in handcuffs.

The condemnation was announced in a press release signed by Farhana Saeed, deputy director of the commission, on Thursday afternoon.

The press release stated that Ali Azam, president of the BNP's Boali union unit in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur, has attended the namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayers) of his mother in handcuffs.

He was released on parole for three hours on December 20 and was allowed to attend his mother's funeral. He had to perform all the duties in handcuffs.

The commission felt that carrying a prisoner to his mother's funeral in handcuffs after being released on parole is not only inhumane but also against the constitution and fundamental human rights of Bangladesh, it added.

Mentioning that according to Article 35 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, no person shall be subjected to torture in the course of trial or punishment, the commission stated that to ensure security additional security personnel should have been deployed instead of keeping the prisoner handcuffed.
