BNP to hold press conference Friday afternoon

The BNP will hold a press conference on Friday afternoon following the detention of the party's two top leaders and the uncertainty over holding a rally at Naya Paltan.

The decision was taken at the standing committee meeting of the party held virtually on Friday. A press conference will be held at party chairperson's office in Gulshan at 3pm.

BNP Standing Committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku said: “The reason behind taking the two leaders was to disrupt the December 10 rally. But this won't stop the rally from happening.”

The BNP in the early hours of Friday said plainclothes police picked up its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas from their homes in separate raids in the capital.

Meanwhile, DB police has called on a BNP leader to inform the DMP in writing about holding the December 10 rally at Gopibagh ground.

A senior official of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Intelligence) requested Law Affairs Secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Barrister Kayser Kamal to take the letter.

Sources of the BNP Standing Committee said that the venue of the December 10 rally is still being discussed at various levels of the government. Although the names of Kamalapur Stadium and Mirpur Bangla College were discussed Thursday night, BNP now mentioned Gopibagh ground as their preferred venue.
