Rizvi: Barricades in front of Khaleda Zia's house a new level of torture

Police setting up check posts and barricades in front of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's Gulshan residence is a new dimension of torture, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said.

“The police have blocked the house of the former prime minister of Bangladesh with checkposts and barricades. This is another new level of torture,” he said at a press conference held at BNP's central office in Dhaka's Naya Paltan area on Sunday.

“She (Khaleda Zia) is already trapped inside her house,” he added.

Rizvi also claimed the barricades and check posts were set up to keep Khaleda Zia under close surveillance.

Police had set up a checkpost in front of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's Gulshan residence in Dhaka on Saturday night.

Police claimed that the checkposts were part of a special drive to arrest drug peddlers, militants, and criminals in the capital city.

The law enforcers surrounded a Banani hotel in Dhaka on Saturday night suspecting a militant hideout.

The Police Headquarters earlier directed the field-level officials to carry out a 15-day special drive across the country from December 1 to ward off any untoward incident ahead of Victory Day.

Chiefs of all police units and superintendents of police in all districts have been asked to conduct the drive between December 1 and 15, according to an order sent by the operations wing of the PHQ on November 29.
