A 70-year-old man was killed and at least 10 people sustained bullet injuries during a clash between two rival groups of ruling party Awami League in Munshiganj Sadar upazila' Bakultala of Adhara union on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Monir Hossain Mollah, son of late Motaleb Mollah.
The clash erupted between the followers Ali Hossain, president of 2 no ward AL of Adhara union and Suruj Hossain, general secretary of the unit, in the afternoon over establishing supremacy in the area, said police quoting to locals, reports Bangla Tribune.
After that, there were a series of clashes, crude bomb explosions and exchange of fire, said police.
At least 11 people sustained bullet injuries in the clash.
Monir's son-in-law Abul Bashar said his father-in-law was on his way to a mosque. "He was shot during a clash between the two groups while returning from the mosque after offering prayers."
The 70-year-old died at 9pm while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Tarikuzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station, reports UNB.
Ruhul Amin, duty doctor of Munshiganj General Hospital, said that 11 patients with bullet wounds were brought to an emergency unit of the hospital.
After giving primary treatment, they were referred to DMCH, said the duty doctor.
An uneasy calm prevails in the area now, and additional police forces have been deployed there, the OC added.
