Over 10,000 children die from drowning in Bangladesh every year

As many as 10,000 children die of drowning in Bangladesh every year and it is one of the top five causes of child death in the country.

The information was revealed in the workshop on “Issue-based news writing to prevent child drowning deaths” organized by private media organizations at Satkhira Civil Surgeon's office on Saturday.

It was presented that 235,000 children are drowning in water every year and 90% of these children are from low and middle income countries. Drowning is currently considered the third leading cause of unintentional death and injury to children in the world.

Bangladesh has the highest drowning death rate of children under five years of age in the world and most of the drowning incidents take place between 9am and 1pm.

The experts said that it was possible to reduce the death rate of children through drowning in Bangladesh through three preventable measures.

The preventable measures are keeping children under five years in day care centers for a certain time of the day, teaching swimming to the children aged 5-10 years and spreading mass awareness.

Additional District Magistrate of Satkhira Md Reza Rashid spoke as the chief guest in the opening ceremony of this training workshop.
